Chapter 12

Scarlett

HOW HAD THIS HAPPENED? How had I convinced myself to step out of my comfort zone, be someone different, do something exciting, and ended up on a plane plummeting to the ground? This was precisely why I never did anything unpredictable and new, because when you did, you only ended up hurt.

Or in a plane crash, apparently.

Why hadn’t I listened to my instincts, which had screamed at me to stay home? Wasn’t this the definition of irony, according to that song? I didn’t want to be the one to prove the singer right.

At least I’d had the best sex of my life before dying.

The thought sent a hysterical giggle through me, as though my mind couldn’t quite grasp that I was in this situation. This insane situation. In an airplane full of screaming, crying people that had just had one of its engines shot off.

Ordinary people didn’t go through things like this. Normal people went to work, went home, went to sleep, and did it again the next day. Normal people didn’t end up in a plane targeted by terrorists. Even Josh was safely on the ground, probably chatting up some perky blonde who was way more exciting than I was, in bed and elsewhere.

I was going to die. I was absolutely certain of it. Would it be painful or instant? Who would tell my parents and my sister, and what would they tell them? Would they ever get my body back? Who would take care of Cheeto—I’d never created a will that spelled out who would take her. I just hoped my sister or parents would make sure she was okay instead of letting her end up in some hellhole.

No, I was sure Kelsey would make sure Cheeto was cared for because she knew that was what I would have wanted.

Wanted. Past tense.

The wild giggle became a strangled sob. I wished I’d kissed Cheeto one more time, or called Kelsey before we’d taken off, or called my parents one last time to say goodbye. But I’d been too rushed, too busy, too anxious, too caught up in my tryst with Herman to think about all that. And now my phone was tucked in my bag under the seat in front of me where I couldn’t get it, so I’d never get the chance.

I lowered my head closer to my knees, tightening my arms around my legs. At least I was in my seat, with my seatbelt on, and I’d watched the safety information at the beginning. But how exactly was this position supposed to save me when we crashed? At least something couldn’t come flying over the seat and decapitate me like the people running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Out of the corner of my eye, I could see the people who hadn’t been in their seats and now didn’t have the time or wherewithal to find one and strap themselves in. Some were hanging on to chairs, and others were crouched in the aisle, curled in on themselves or in the fetal position as people and luggage flew around them.
